In the book house on mango street there are a lot of symbols using the same words to describe these symbols. Certain words come up more than others such as Falling, Trees, Red/Pink, Blue, Yellow, Rats/Mice, Clouds/Sky, and Kisses/Lips. In this particular blog posts I'm going to focus on the symbolism Cisneros shows with her Kisses/Lips.

We know so far that Cisneros main character is very Insecure about herself especially sexually. Early on the book a bunch of boys get moved into the neighborhood, and that’s somewhat when Esperanza kinda gets confused about where she stands with boys. The weird thing is in the beginning I understand why she’s afraid of kissing because she’s a little girl.

But later on in the book even though Cisneros doesn’t make it completely clear I’m pretty sure that Esperanza is fifteen when this specific Incident happens:

“ Your son and his friends took sally keys, and now they wont give them back unless she kisses them...What do you want me to do, she said call the cops?”

Right before this quote Esperanza went jetting down the street from the monkey garden to go tell Tito’s mom (Tito is the boy forcing sally to kiss him), and when she went back to the monkey garden she tried to get Tito and the boys not kiss sally by using a brick but they all looked at her like she was crazy; and she left embarrassed and by this time I’m pretty sure she had to be fifteen.

But it’s ironic that before that she was dreaming of kissing Sire “Sire. How did you hold her? Was it?  Like this? And when you kissed her? Like this?” Before this quote Esperanza the narrator talks about how when she started living on Mango street a gut named Sire would stare at her, and talk about her admirably. So later on she has a dream of Sire kissing her and admiring her even more.

In the last quote “he grabs my face with both hands and kisses me hard on the mouth and doesn’t let go.” In this quote Esperanza just got her first job and a old man continuously kissed her. Esperanza already has this really bad experience with men and kissing, and not it’s just made worse.
